Relocating Pets to Hong Kong
Hong Kong, officially known as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (HKSAR), is a metropolitan area and special administrative region of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta in South China. Hong Kong isn't exactly the most dog-friendly city in the world, with many residential buildings and even neighborhood parks barring pets from entry. While many people own pets in Hong Kong, the city's laws severely limit the ways dogs and cats can access public spaces, which inflicts a physical and mental toll on Hong Kong's canine population. Except for guide dogs, pets are banned from the city's public buses and the MTR, as well as the vast majority of public parks.
While Hong Kong's urban planners and legislators have failed to make it a pet-friendly place, the hills are what attract most pet owners. The hills are free for all and are one of the most visited places for pet owners for hikes, playtime, or just for spending some quality time with your furry companion.
The first step while traveling with your pet to Hong Kong is to have your pet microchipped with an ISO-compliant microchip before travel.
Pets must be vaccinated against Rabies between 30 days and 12 months before entry into the country. Dogs must be vaccinated against DHPPIL and cats must be vaccinated against feline panleucopaenia and feline respiratory disease complex.
While a Rabies titer test is not mandatory in Hong Kong, service dogs can get a titer test done to avoid quarantine.
A special permit must be obtained in advance from the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department before import. The validity of the permit is 6 months and is valid for 1 pet only.
Pets need a Veterinary Certificate for Hong Kong issued by an accredited veterinarian within 14 days of entry to Hong Kong and they also need a certificate from the airline personnel stating that the pet traveled in its crate during the entire journey and in case of transit via other countries, the pet did not leave the cargo area of the airport neither did the pet come in contact with other animals.
Pets must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the port of entry to Hong Kong. All pets are subject to 4 months of quarantine at a pre-approved quarantine facility.
Pets must enter as air cargo at the international airports in Hong Kong. The flight must be as direct as possible and should not transit through a high-rabies country. In the case of a transit flight, a transit permit is required. The Duty Officer of the Import & Export Section must be notified at least 24 hours ahead of arrival.
Pets that are over 4 months pregnant and under 5 months old are not allowed to enter Hong Kong and must be vaccinated against Rabies no sooner than 90 days of age.
Hong Kong bans the following breeds- Pit Bull Terrier, the Japanese Tosa, the Dogo Argentino, Savannah Cats, the Fila Braziliero and service dogs are also subject to the ban.
